![]() About me
Hi I’m Wayne Taylor I started playing golf in 1960 with my father at Bondi Golf Club. A small 9 hole par 3 course that did not seem so small at the age of 5. We played early every Saturday morning with a group of guys. I think Jim Ballard was the pro there at the time. I remember one of the things that puzzled me as I got older and played more was that I always went to the course expecting to play well but rarely did.
I did not know the word consistency then, all I knew was I hit good shots and then terrible shots. It was very disappointing to have such high expectations, and to have them shattered. My dad tried to help as he was not a bad golfer, but while he knew what to do he did not know how to teach someone else. He was an electrician. In high school I was pretty good at most sports and represented the school in field athletics, tennis and golf. Playing high school golf against other high schools I still found I never knew when I was going to play well, hit a good or a bad shot. It was like a lucky dip, putting your hand into a bag or a box, you never knew what prize you would pull out. Addressing the ball it was just hit and hope.
I must have become better at golf over those years but I did not really know why, except I played, I practised, and I expected to. In 1973 I started an apprenticeship to become a professional golfer at Woollahra Golf Club in Rose Bay, Sydney with W.A. (Bill) Podmore and over the next four years I worked at learning that trade. I learned how to make and repair golf clubs, how to sell and fit golf equipment, how to play and to teach. In 1978 I turned professional and went out playing in pro-ams and the like and trying to make a living at playing golf. I must have become better at golf over those years but I did not really know why, except I played, I practised, and I expected to.
It was not until about 1990 that I really started to learn about the golf swing, about physics, physiology and psychology. It was about then that realised how little I knew and how much work I had ahead of me if I wanted to be a golf coach. Over the next 14 years I spent as much time as possible with the people considered good golf coaches, going to seminars, watching players and videos, reading and thinking. Above all else putting it into practice and seeing what worked, what feed back did I get. Did I give the right information but explained it wrongly or was I working on symptoms not causes. Of course the successes were what made it all worth while. There are no short cuts to this learning process, it is very much experiential learning, even armed with all the best information. Much of what I learned was at Riverwood Golf Club in Sydney where Bill See Hoe was the club pro for many years. I formulated and taught the ‘path’ from novice to club level golfer to over 3000 hopeful golfers over a 12 year period. I loved the hundreds of hours I spent with those people and was sad when it came to an end due to the closure of the practice facility. I then spent 3 years at Beverley Park Golf Club in Sydney and I want to thank Brad Mitchell for dragging me into the 21st century by introducing me to the Titleist Performance Institute, 3D bio mechanics, state of the art club fitting techniques and the fore front of coaching mechanics. It was also about this time I started playing again. Seniors golf in Australia starts at 50 and is now called the Legends Tour. Of course I expected to be able to go out there and play the way I did 30 years earlier. Did I get a surprise. My body did not move the same way and I did not hit the ball as far, I had less feel and more fear. Back to the drawing board. Now I have all this knowledge, can I teach myself? Time will tell. Currently I am teaching full time at Camden Lakeside Country Club in Sydney, which has a great practice facility and is a sensational golf course. The basis for my philosophy now is knowledge-refinement-practice-refinement-knowledge-refinement-practice-refinement. What will they teach in another 100 years? Book a Lesson 0411 812222
